Lac caninum, Hormones, and Body Image

“The greatest fear dogs know is the fear that you will not come back when you go out the door without them.” – Stanley Coren (psychologist/author, “The Intelligence of Dogs”

Milk remedies in general can be indicated when there are underlying emotional issues with the mother, such as a feeling of abandonment, a lack of connection with the family, or a lack of nurturing. There may be a history of not being or feeling loved by the mother or not being breastfed by the mother. This remedy can be helpful for mothers who find it hard to connect with their own children. There may be a history of abuse or dysfunctional family dynamics. The Lac remedies are helpful for separation anxiety and traumas when there is a feeling of helplessness and indignation. There can be a ‘victim mentality’ that hinders the ability to move forward in life. Eating disorders or addictions can also be present in people who may benefit from Lac remedies. Physical symptoms that are common in Lac remedies include insomnia, nausea, fatigue, and menstrual issues.

Lac caninum is a homeopathic remedy made from dog’s milk. Themes of Lac caninum include loyalty, low self esteem, fear, submissiveness, abuse, aggression, and body image disorders. Low self-esteem, a feeling of being inferior to others, aversion to self, or self-loathing are strong symptoms of this remedy. This can lead to eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia. More extreme expressions of self-disgust are evident in body or gender dysmorphia, repeated plastic surgeries, and body modifications. Depression, dizziness, fear of falling, sudden rages, and forgetfulness are also part of the Lac caninum picture.

“You kick a dog long enough, that dog is going to bite you or die.” – Dave Pelzer

This remedy is useful for arthritic pains that wander between joints and are better for cool applications. Pain tends to alternate between the left and right sides. As a milk remedy, Lac caninum has an affinity with the breasts and can help regulate the flow of milk when there is either a lack of milk or too much milk when breastfeeding an infant. Sore throats with painful swallowing, tonsillitis, and diphtheria that is worse on the left side or alternates sides can be helped with this remedy. Hormonal issues including PMS with swollen, sensitive breasts, dysmenorrhea, ovarian pain and cysts, and leucorrhea are other indications for Lac caninum.

National Dog Day is August 26th. Dogs have enriched the lives of humans for centuries. They have been faithful companions and many provide help to those who are disabled. Highly trained dogs work with their handlers in law enforcement to detect drugs, bombs, and missing persons. Books and movies have depicted the awe-inspiring feats of dogs who have rescued people, survived perilous journeys, and alerted others to danger. It is fitting that a homeopathic remedy made from dog’s milk can be used to help those who are suffering in specific areas. When the symptoms fit, consider Lac caninum.
